ALASKA – Ben Meyer & Josh Bledsoe

Day two in Alaska was filled with learning and growing. The state officers continued with workshops for students as well as the Creed Speaking and Prepared Public Speaking LDEs. David did an incredible job facilitating a workshop for all of the students focused on goal setting. Ben and Josh provided some advice on job interviewing skills and tips on public speaking.

While the students toured the farm, Ben and Josh met with the teachers and state staff for a great discussion on how National FFA can continue to provide quality service and resources to the state and the local level.

An informal dinner with the state officers provided even more great conversation and insight into the Alaska FFA and how we can continue to make a positive difference in the lives of students.

How’s the weather, you ask? Well, check out the pictures! Today was the first day it hadn’t snowed and the first day we saw the sunshine and the breathtaking mountains! It was still chilly – we started the day at -8 and only reached 11 for the high.

Happy days!

NORTH DAKOTA – SeeTrail Mackey

We visited the cities of Munich, Grafton and ended the day in Fargo. In addition national officer DeShawn Blanding participated in a radio broadcast at Red River Farm Network. He gave an overall summary of his experience so far as a national officer, his experience in North Dakota as well as what he hope to see for the future of ag and FFA.

In Munich, all of the high school’s students were farmers with 100 percent FFA participation. The second school in Grafton started its first chapter of FFA this year with 80 members. Grafton invited neighboring chapters to visit while we were there and DeShawn delivered a keynote speech and a workshop with over 350 students. We ended the evening with dinner with the 10 of North Dakota’s current and former state officers.

NEW MEXICO – Rebecca Carter

Wow, what a day full of sunshine, open roads and wide open spaces. Tuesday we started in the mountains at Cloudcroft High School for a workshop, then headed Northeast to Roswell HS for an officer training. We ended the day at the famous Pie Dinner at Artesia High School FFA. Yes, “pie, oh my” for dinner. Loved it! We also said thanks to the local Tractor Supply Co. while in Artesia.

TENNESSEE – Nicole Beckley

Tuesday in Tennessee began with a visit to Northview Academy FFA in Sevier County, which is near the East Tennessee area recently impacted by fires. It served as a collection point for donations and distribution during the fire emergency. Advisor Buddy Crass is in his first year at this relatively new program and it has about 45 members. The chapter’s CDEs have grown from one to now five.

The school is graduating its first class of seniors in 2017 and it currently has students from 7-12th grade enrolled. Mr. Crass often takes the rolling hydroponic tower gardens (pictured) to 7-8th grade classes for recruitment demonstrations in hopes that it will spark interest with those students to join FFA once they are in 9th grade.

Northview has a Wall of FFAme, which celebrates its members’ highest achievements (pictured). The program boasts a greenhouse and the aforementioned hydroponics, growing strawberries, tomatoes, lettuces, plus ferns and flowers that will be sold/donated for prom (pictured). The chapter will work hand in hand with the school’s culinary arts students in providing food.

Trey presented a 45-minute workshop on “Masters of Self Confidence” to a very enthusiastic group.

Our next stop was the State Officer Goodwill Tour Luncheon hosted by the University of Tennessee College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (photos provided). There were around 300 in attendance, mostly FFA members. Upon leaving the campus, we then headed over to Tennessee Technological University, which sponsored another luncheon in honor of the state officer tour during National FFA Week (photos coming).

At each lunch gathering, the state officer team gave a presentation on the history of Tennessee FFA and National FFA over the years. Frank and I were warmly introduced as special guests from National FFA, and Trey gave a brief speech with a very poignant message about life lessons learned on the golf course. Following the TTU luncheon at the Hyder-Burks Agricultural Pavilion, we were given a very special tour of the TTU School of Agriculture greenhouses, classrooms and one of their two farms.

Because we hadn’t had enough to eat already, we stopped by local Cookeville, Tenn., favorite Ralph’s Donuts on the way to our next destination. Recommended wholeheartedly by everyone we ran into in the area, we couldn’t resist trying the “best” local donuts and they definitely lived up to the hype! Energized by the sugar rush, we headed on to Cookeville High School for the last chapter visit of the day.

Members of the Cookeville FFA, as well as members and advisors from surrounding schools, were delighted to get to know Trey and participate in his interactive workshop (pics and videos provided). Participating students displayed a myriad of talents including, but not limited to, role playing, doing “The Worm” (see video) and practicing Creed Speaking. They were very gracious hosts and we were thrilled to see their shop, classrooms and small animals.
